Logistics
The UK logistics sector is worth £55bn to the economy. It currently employs approximately 1.7 million people spanning some 65,000 companies.
Freight logistics companies fall into two groups, those that manage their own distribution system and those that manage it on behalf of another company, such organisations are referred to as Third Party Logistics (3PL). Over 70% of UK freight is carried out for ‘Hire and Reward’ on behalf of another company.
Skills Shortage
There is currently a major shortage of LGV drivers; this is exacerbated by the industry's poor record of attracting women and workers from minority ethnic communities.
Industry Perception
Logistics currently suffers from a misguided perception that it is a poor industry in which to develop a successful career path. There are many career opportunities available at a variety of levels within logistics.
North Notts College has created a totally employer led provision in Logistics and has recently achieved CoVE status in this field.
The College can now provide a totally flexible and responsive provision to employers ensuring there is a ‘no wrong door’ strategy.
The College has worked closely with local companies to provide learning centres with 24 7 access to learning for employees in the industry.
