“Skills are a key part of our plan for economic recovery, and an urgent challenge. This country’s future can only be built by people who have the skills demanded by modern work in a globalised economy. Skilled people are more productive, they are more innovative, and they build stronger businesses. Skills give individuals wider options; they climb higher, earn more and get more work out. And skilled people are the foundation of successful businesses.” Lord Peter Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills

Small Failings Can Cost!

North East Essex Primary Care Trust was recently fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs of £4,972 after a vulnerable patient fell 4.3 metres from a first floor window. The retired 68-year-old suffered a blow to the head and broke his pelvis, shoulder and coccyx in the fall. The HSE prosecuted over the incident.

The window was able to open 254mm, but since 1989 NHS standards have required such a window to only open to 100mm by fitting a window restrictor.

Shortly before the incident the Department of Health required the PCT  to identify any window restrictors that didn’t comply - this was not done!

HSE Inspector Kim Wicks said:

“North East Essex Primary Care Trust failed in its duty to ensure the health and safety of this retired gentleman, … All PCTs must ensure they adhere to recognised NHS safety standards … If North East Essex PCT had done so this unfortunate incident could have been avoided.”

Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act states: “It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that persons not in his employment are not exposed to risks to their health or safety.”

One Death is Too Many Says ACAS Report

Directors of construction firms should be held personally responsible for injuries and deaths on building sites, an official report has urged.

The report, commissioned by the government last year and written by Rita Donaghy, the former chair of employment arbitration service Acas, recommends imposing ‘positive duties’ on company directors, which could lead to them being prosecuted for safety lapses.

The awards are run by UK Skills on behalf of the Department for Innovation Universities and Skills (DIUS)  is aimed at two or more organisations working together to design deliver and evaluate learning. The award seeks to acknowledge and celebrate the impact and success created through the use of a collaborative approach to learning.

Winning a National Training Award brings with it a real sense of pride and kudos.  The external recognition can help us really raise the profile of our organisation and the work we are doing.

Employer Engagement Team @ Retford B4B

16th September

“When asked about the recession I thought about it and decided not to participate”

Sam Walton, founder or WalMart

The Employer Engagement Team gave an upbeat talk to 50+ delegates at the Retford Business Club today at the Idle Valley Rural Learning Centre.  The talk outlined some of the opportunities available for employers to access funding to cover the costs of training existing staff and recruiting and training new staff as we approach the cusp of economic growth.

“Hard times may continue for a time yet but I’d encourage all employers to ensure they continue to invest in training their staff, having a skilled workforce is just as critical during a downturn as when times are good”

Tim Gladman Business Development Manager NNC.

Record numbers of people successfully completing apprenticeships

A record 143,400 people completed their apprenticeship in the 2008/09 academic year, according to data on vocational qualifications released today by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Statistics also showed that 239,900 people started an apprenticeship in the same academic year!

This increase of 27.4 per cent compared to 2007/08 smashes all previous records and means the Government has met its target to increase the number of apprenticeship completions two years early.  The overall success rate for apprenticeships was 70.9% 2008/09, significantly higher than the target success rate of 65%

Apprenticeships Minister Kevin Brennan said:

“It’s great news that we’re seeing the highest ever number of people completing an apprenticeship.. I’d like to congratulate all the people who have successfully completed an apprenticeship, and all the businesses who continue to offer apprenticeships, even in  difficult economic times”.

“The figures speak for themselves: they show that apprenticeships today are rightly regarded as an excellent way to train and build the nation’s skills. As we rebuild growth, it’s essential that we continue to invest in people and their skills, especially in industries key to our future economic success”.
