North East Essex Primary Care Trust was recently fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs of £4,972 after a vulnerable patient fell 4.3 metres from a first floor window. The retired 68-year-old suffered a blow to the head and broke his pelvis, shoulder and coccyx in the fall. The HSE prosecuted over the incident.

The window was able to open 254mm, but since 1989 NHS standards have required such a window to only open to 100mm by fitting a window restrictor.

Shortly before the incident the Department of Health required the PCT to identify any window restrictors that didn’t comply – this was not done!

HSE Inspector Kim Wicks said:

“North East Essex Primary Care Trust failed in its duty to ensure the health and safety of this retired gentleman, … All PCTs must ensure they adhere to recognised NHS safety standards … If North East Essex PCT had done so this unfortunate incident could have been avoided.”

Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act states: “It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that persons not in his employment are not exposed to risks to their health or safety.”

At a gala event on the 20th October NNC in partnership with Wilkinson were awarded the East Midlands regional prize in the ‘Partnership and Collaboration’ section.

The National Training Awards (NTAs) are the UK’s most prestigious awards for training. They identify and celebrate organisations and individuals that have achieved outstanding business and personal success through investment in training.

The awards are run by UK Skills on behalf of the Department for Innovation Universities and Skills (DIUS) is aimed at two or more organisations working together to design deliver and evaluate learning. The award seeks to acknowledge and celebrate the impact and success created through the use of a collaborative approach to learning.

Entries are judged against the following criteria:

The organisation, teams and individual needs are clearly defined and measured

The learning and development activity is fit for purpose and resources used effectively / efficiently

The delivery of learning and development activities benefits employers, individuals and/or society

The improved individual and team performance is maintained

The organisations can illustrate how the collaboration works and measure the benefits of collaboration

The NTAs are special because they receive entries from all sectors, industries and areas across the UK and provide us with the unique opportunity to have our training judged against the best in the UK.

Winning a National Training Award brings with it a real sense of pride and kudos. The external recognition can help us really raise the profile of our organisation and the work we are doing.

In today’s highly competitive and ever-changing economic climate, training is more important than ever. The creation of a highly skilled workforce increases performance and productivity, brings success to individuals and businesses, and contributes to the UK as a whole – put simply, training reaps rewards!

“When asked about the recession I thought about it and decided not to participate”

Sam Walton, founder or WalMart

The Employer Engagement Team gave an upbeat talk to 50+ delegates at the Retford Business Club today at the Idle Valley Rural Learning Centre. The talk outlined some of the opportunities available for employers to access funding to cover the costs of training existing staff and recruiting and training new staff as we approach the cusp of economic growth.

“Hard times may continue for a time yet but I’d encourage all employers to ensure they continue to invest in training their staff, having a skilled workforce is just as critical during a downturn as when times are good”
